Begin With a Base of Ingredients
It is always helpful when starting out to make a list of the primary ingredients you are going to need. Of course you can always mix things up to your liking, but this will be what you may want to always include. There will also be somethings that are optional, but may be a good idea to add either for flavor or more nutritional value.
These ingredients include:
- Protein Powder (Many different types such as whey, vegan, and hemp).
- Frozen Banana or Ice.
- Yogurt (any type, including Greek).
- Milk (can be soy or almond milk).
- Fruits or veggies.
- Additives (optional such as nuts or maple syrup).
Tip: Frozen bananas can be used over ice for more nutrition. When you are adding ice to a protein drink, it is mainly to keep the drink cold. You can do the same using frozen bananas and get all the extra nutritional value that a banana will give you. Using frozen bananas will still give you the consistency and temperature that you would get if you used ice.
Go to the store and purchase a bunch of bananas and cut them into either halves or quarters. You can then place these cut bananas into a container and put them in the freezer to freeze them. Each time you make a protein shake, grab the amount of bananas you desire and add them in, giving you a more flavorful, cold, and nutritious, protein shake.
Other Additions You Can Use
Some people are happy with keeping their protein shake as simple as they can. But let’s not forget that you can easily change the nutritional value and flavor of your shake with some easily added ingredients.
If you are not concerned about the little extra effort or would like your shake to be more nutritious, this is something that is definitely encouraged.
Here are some of the ingredients you can add, but the options can be endless:
- Spices, such as cinnamon
- Your favorite yogurt
- Soy milk, or almond milk

- Add in Fruit or Veggies
Remember, just because you are making a protein shake, it doesn’t mean it can’t be similar to a smoothie or even a healthy green juice drink. You can still include some healthy greens or other fruits and vegetables and mix them up to give you a super healthy and tasty protein shake.
Some other great healthy options you can add include kale, spinach, berries, and beets.
